Both my parents are artists and I have been surrounded by image making for most of my life, my father being a painter and mother a ceramicist. I was born in Stoke on Trent, in the Staffordshire Potteries and moved to London at 20 to work in a Gallery and then on to study Photography at Nottingham Trent University.
Since graduating I have worked as a freelance photographer for 16 years starting at The Face and Sleazenation magazines, shooting club kids and documenting sub-cultures. My personal work focuses primarily on, social documentation of people.
I have since photographed features for The Sunday Times Magazine on British Lidos, for The New Yorker on Jeremy Scott and ASAP Rocky for iD magazine.
My personal projects often have themes running through them, for example a portrait series on the Afro-Punk movement in NYC. A self-published book on underage festival kids between 12-18 years old. I am fascinated by the subject of the “teenager”, focusing on behavioural patterns and how they express themselves and their identity through fashion. Having documented kids at the “Underage Festival” for 5 years, this developed into a book with a foreword written by Craig Mclean. This book came 2nd in the World International Photography Awards. My varied portfolio includes portrait and project collections for Vogue, Teen Vogue, W magazine, high-end brands such as Adidas, Quicksilver, Easyjet and a series on ‘young hopefuls’ for Lloyds TSB Olympics campaign. I have just made a short film on Skater Girl JOSIE for i-D magazine with 230K views.
My photography is bright, colourful and energetic and my style of working is one of relaxed communication, which elicits something authentic from my subjects. I am constantly in search of honesty, personalities and stories, its what I find attractive in people that helps me to capture those genuine moments in time. When I photograph a subject, I’m not just trying to curate it, I’m reading the way people act, watching how they respond and using that understanding to get the best image on camera. In order to capture these moments, it can take a number of people on set and I am incredibly lucky to have a great team that I can rely on. I usually work by placing a number of people in a situation and then see what happens, having fun and letting it produce itself. I am at ease working anywhere in the world but my home is in East London.
